Facelifted Ford Edge revealed to American market
Ford has revealed the updated Edge – its largest SUV sold in Europe – with a hot ST version for the US too
Ford’s biggest SUV sold in Europe will get a new look inspired by the smaller Ecosport, with a more aggressive headlight design, with LED lights as standard and a new ovular grille at the front, and a deletion of the characteristic light bar at the rear. A more conventional gloss black extension of the glass is in its place, with larger separate rear light clusters.
In the US, a 335bhp, 380lb ft 2.7-litre V6-powered Edge ST spearheads the range, although this won’t make it to the UK or Europe when deliveries begin next year. The European version will exclusively have diesel engines, carried over from the pre-facelift car.
The sportiest Edge available to UK customers will be the ST-Line trim with Ford’s 2.0-litre diesel engine. A power hike may be on the cards, although Ford couldn’t confirm so far ahead of the European car’s launch. The 210bhp ST-Line is the current car’s range-topper, starting at £40,595.
For US-spec cars, the 2.0-litre Ecoboost petrol engine has been boosted by 5bhp, with greater fuel economy to boot.
More tech has been added to the Volkswagen Touareg rival, including Ford’s new Evasive Steering Assist, which mitigates crashes by helping the car steer around obstacles, with adaptive cruise control with lane centring and post-collision braking now available in the range.
Automatic gearbox-equipped cars also now get a rotary gear shifter in place of the current car’s lever, as part of a wider redesign of the centre console.
